Chapter 19

AFTER REALIZING THAT HIS NEW TOY could only fly by consuming a horrific amount of energy, Sergey switched the Dagger back to ground mode and set out for his destination. The bike instantly started zipping down the empty street. Zero to sixty in half a second is no joke, but, fortunately, the bike’s G-force control system turned on automatically, covering the driver (pilot, really) with a semitransparent shield so he didn’t experience any discomfort.

As soon as he left the town, he instantly ran into a number of obstacles that seriously slowed him down.

“What if...” the man mumbled, then activated the battering ram shield. The front of the motorcycle was instantly bathed in a greenish glow, almost like the flaming tail of a meteorite as it smashes through the atmosphere. The steel beast slammed into a small sedan, literally blasting it apart, leaving chunks of melted metal in its wake.

“Hot damn...”

The shield’s power has decreased by ten units.

“Son of a bitch!”

The thrifty biker turned off the battering ram shield and started avoiding obstacles rather than plowing straight through them. This meant that he had to reduce his speed to 30 mph, but it still only took him about forty minutes to get to Laon. According to one of the bikers who had been opposed to Archangel’s rule, the survivor camp was located in a big box store to the north of the town. Despite this, Sergey was stopped on the outskirts of town — to be exact, the guards tried to stop him, but when they saw what he was riding, they all froze, and the biker ended up stopping himself.

(FR) “Monsieur... are you... here on business, or just passing through?” said one of three armed men as he carefully examined the steel monstrosity and its driver clad in futuristic armor. The Dagger wasn’t actually made of steel, but some kind of super-durable polymer.

(EN) “Do ya speak English?”

(EN) “I do,” said an elderly Systemer with a bow on his back, raising his hand. “Are you here on business, or just passing through?”

(EN) “Just passin’ through. But if there’s a survivor camp in this town, maybe we can do some business. You guys need food, right?”

(EN) “Um... I don’t...” before the old man could finish his sentence, the biker waved his hand, and a massive pile of potatoes appeared in the middle of the road. Another wave, and the potatoes vanished.

(EN) “Alright, pass it along to yer leaders, and ask ‘em to make up their minds quick — I don’t like to be kept waitin’,” the man on the monstrosity said, then folded a sheet of paper into a paper airplane and sent it flying toward the old man.

(EN) “Okay... understood!” the old Systemer replied, catching the paper airplane with some difficulty.

(FR) “What did he say, Amedi? And what’s that?”

(FR) “Just shut up and give me a walkie-talkie, NOW!”

The old man grabbed a walkie-talkie out of the other guard’s hands, got in touch with the people in charge, and relayed the contents of the sheet, which was, of course, a price list.
